Ninth Chords
What is the 9th note of a major scale?
A scale has 7 notes as shown previously. The 8th note is the root repeated an octave higher.
The next note above the octave is the 9th degree.
The Add 9 chord.
The add 9 chord is a major chord with an extra note replacing the upper root
note with a note two frets above it.
Replacing the "C" note on the first fret, second string with a "D" note on the
third fret second string creates an C add 9 chord,
You are playing the notes C, E, G, D.
This is different from the C dominant 9 which has the "Bb" (7th note) included.
Play the open "C" major chord and then the C add9 chord.

The "D" note, finger 3 is the 9th note of a C major scale.
This new chord adds a new dimension any song.
Play a C Major chord and a Cadd9 chord, back and forth. Cool!!
Try an A add 9 chord.
The add 9 ninth note you might notice is the same note as played in a sus 2.
The difference is that in a add 9 chord the 3rd note of a the scale is not played.
